What to do in an emergency

Assess them – If they’re not fully conscious, put them in the recovery position and make sure they’re not left alone.

Reassure them – Talk to them in a quiet, calm and reassuring manner. Consider calling the police if their safety or that of others becomes threatened.

Respond to symptoms – e.g. If they are overheating, remove unnecessary clothing and get them outside or somewhere cooler.

If someone vomits you should:

  • Try and keep them sitting up.
  • If they must lay down, make sure they’re in the recovery position and that their mouth and airways are clear.
  • Loosen any tight clothing that might restrict their breathing.
  • If they begin to choke, get help immediately.
  • Don’t leave them, even if you can’t bear the sight or smell of vomit.
